INT: A CHATEAU UP IN MONT VINAIGRIER, ÈZE – DUSK

CLOSE UP – PIERRE’S FACE

Pierre is kneeling next to Bertha’s bed, holding her left hand. His sorrowful eyes are fixing at her pale face.

BERTHA

Tell me, please tell me that what I perceived to be your feelings for me back then was not a mere illusion of my own. Tell me that all those insinuating words and suggestive smiles that have since been tormenting me were not only your cordiality. You actually did love me, didn’t you?

Pierre bits his lips. His eyes are still fixing at Bertha’s face.

CUT TO:

CLOSE UP – BERTHA’S FACE

Tears are running down Bertha’s pale face. She closes her eyes and frowns as if there is a sudden pain occurs in her chest.

PIERRE

(alarm)

Bertha! What’s wrong? Are you feeling the pain again? Bertha?

Bertha opens her eyes softly, shaking her head. Tears are continuing from her eyes.

BERTHA

I thought it was a pain. But perhaps it was just a mere illusion.
